Yesterday my beloved Denise Long attended the international gathering of the Labyrinth Society.
In Greek mythology, the labyrinth was an elaborate structure built by Daedalus for King Minos at Knossos. Its function was to hold the Minotaur eventually killed by Theseus. Daedalus had so cunningly made the Labyrinth that he could barely escape it after he built it.
Modern mystics use labyrinths to help them achieve a contemplative state. Walking among the turnings, one loses track of direction and of the outside world, and thus quiets the mind. The Labyrinth Society provides a locator for modern labyrinths all over the world.
Thank you Dan Niven, Labyrinth builder extraordinare, for bringing magic to so many.
"Dude is a rock star. No, really: 10 tons of rocks, 4-1/2 months of work. What a thrill to hear all about the creation of this magnificent labyrinth here on Bainbridge Island! Gardens by Jeffrey Bale"
"Jeffrey Bale's Pebble Labyrinth at Hall's Hill Lookout on Bainbridge island. People brought rocks/crystals and he placed them in shapes to form this Labyrinth. It will probably last a couple hundred years and requires very little maintenance. Beautiful surrounding and a view of the Puget Sound through the trees."
