Powerless Over Mind

I'll play it first and tell you what it is later.
- Miles Davis

"When you are watching the display of your mind, and it cuts to a scene of how you could be in the Caribbean sipping a drink on a tropical beach and dipping your toes in the sand, you may realize,

“Hey! That’s not my reality. My reality is this too-cramped apartment, a bit of pain in my back, and a wandering mind.” Believe it or not, this is a good thing. Noticing that you are lost in thought is the first step in coming back to the present on a regular basis.

It’s a bit like the first step of Alcoholics Anonymous, where you admit that you are powerless over alcohol. Here you are saying, “I am powerless over this weird display of thoughts and emotions playing out in front of me.” Just like in AA, though, there is a path to gain power, and this is through gently coming back to something other than your force of habit."
