"Standing outside on break at work, and across the street there was a commotion (in the middle of a very busy part of Philadelphia). People started to scatter and run in stores. When everyone cleared there was an erratic mentally ill man standing there. He started to walk across the street right towards me. I just continued to look. He came closer and closer until he was two inches from my face and we locked eyes. He was filled with hate and rage.
The mind was afraid but willing; and what felt like hours I gazed into his eyes with complete vulnerability which turned into a warm feeling of love for him. Then….he cracked an awkward smile and his eyes glimmered for a second and he turned to walk away. And sticking out of his belt along his back was a very large butcher’s knife. He got about 10 feet and was tackled by police."
